San Gervasio is the largest and most famous Mayan Ruins site on Cozumel, dating back to 300-400 A.D when this urban center was dedicated to Ix Chel, the goddess of fertility, medicine, midwifery and weaving. Mayan women used to make a pilgrimage from the mainland to visit the temples and many statues of Ix Chel found here.
The architectural style
appears to be modeled after the capital of the
Itzas, with the white stone roads connecting all
the temples, similar to the roads found at
Chichen Itza. While this ruins site is
small compared to the giant sites on the
mainland, it presents an interesting history of
the Mayan presence on the island of Cozumel.
After you complete your guided tour of the San
Gervasio ruins, we'll head to the wild and
undeveloped Eastern shore of Cozumel, stopping to see the spectacularly
beautiful El Mirador, with it's natural bridges
over the ocean, and crashing waves!
Then spend the rest of your
day at spectacular Isla Mia enjoy a delicious lunch followed by free time to relax, swim, or soak up the sun on the pristine shoreline. A great end to a great
day!
